Merrell® Mix Master Trail Shoe(Factory Irregulars)Merrell Men's Mix Master,Smoke/Anodized Gold,13 M US Review
These are a great 'transition' shoe to barefoot running/walking. they have more sole than a true barefoot shoe (trail glove and road glove) and they don't have as much drop. These look like they would be great light trail runners but the sole is thin and very flexible and I felt every rock. Where I run/walk has lots of rocks from marble size to softball sized half buried in the dirt. Depending on your tastes in shoes this thin/flexible sole might be good for you or might not be. For me (and my 55 yr old feet) they were too flexible and I would get pain in the ball of my foot. The thin soles made them unsuitable for long walks (10+ miles) on paved surfaces. My feet would feel beat by the end of the day. (I am used to 'barefeet' shoes. I have the Merrell Trail Glove and Fila Skele-toes (the Running and Trail model.
These shoe come with a very thin 'micro-cushioning' insole. Just something to keep in mind. It will give you a more 'barefoot' shoe feel. I put a little thicker insoles in mine since I have plenty of barefoot shoes.
As people have said the first model of these shoes would rip in the front of the shoe. Merrell now sells them as 'defect' shoes for a very low price in their outlet stores.
There is a model of the 1st Gen Mix Master that has a rock plate in the forefoot, but good luck finding a sales person who knows this, and or has them in the store. I haven't tried them yet but I think they are going to be awesome for what I need.
I would say these run true to size but if you don't have a wide foot you may find them feeling big. That is pretty much true for all Merrell shoes.
I'm not sure how to sum up my feelings about this shoe. It looked like it would be a great all-around shoe, but for they ended up not being very good for anything. But they are a great shoe, especially as a transition shoe to a barefoot shoe, and you might love them.
