I read hundreds of online reviews of this shoe, each more glowing than the next, and scoured the Internet until I could find a pair that was dramatically reduced in price. Within seconds of trying them on, I thought I must have been on the receiving end of an Internet-wide joke; these were amongst the most uncomfortable shoes I've tried in my life.

I'm still somewhat in shock and am having quite a bit of trouble believing this (Allrounder is so widely lauded), but I have to face the facts, as well as give them to you to decide if you're willing to take a chance on this expensive footwear. Expense is NOT a problem for me; I routinely drop big bucks on multiples styles and colors of Birkenstock, Dansko, and other quality comfort brands. But they have to actually be "comfortable!"

Alright, let's get to it (while I'm still shaking my head in mystification).

MY FOOT DIMENSIONS

1. Usual size: U.S. women's 11; European 42 in Birkenstocks; European 43 in Dansko Professional clogs
2. Length of foot: 10 and � inches
3. Width of foot at widest point (nearer the toes): 3 and 13/16 inches
4. Width of foot at narrowest point (nearer the ankle): 3 and 7/16 inches
5. Top of foot (from beginning of arch over the top of the foot to the other side): approx. 6 inches
6. Height between bottom of heel and the natural "dip" of my ankle: approx. 3 inches
7. Arch: according to the information on several podiatry sites, I have a solidly "Medium" arch (the sort that can wear the widest variety of shoes/arch supports).

SPECS OF SHOE I BOUGHT

1. SIZE. women's 11 (and the underside of the Mary Jane strap says "U.S. 11; Euro 8.5". I don't know what type of Euro measurement that is :shrug: ).

2. MODEL. Allrounder Niro with enclosed (not mesh) sides.

GENERAL DESIGN FLAWS in ALLROUNDER (NIRO) BY MEPHISTO
These are flaws in the actual design, and not problems that might vary depending on one's foot measurements.

1. VERY LITTLE ARCH SUPPORT. I'm not going to tell you there is NO arch support, because I have a pair of Minnetonka ankle boots that literally have zero arch support, and I know what that feels like. But these Allrounders have quite insubstantial arch support. I went out and bought the best orthotics available at my local drugstore (such as they were) just to be able to wear these around the house. Several reviewers on major shoe-selling sites claim these have "excellent" arch support. I don't know what to tell you except they must be used to some no-arch shoes in order to make that claim!

2. INSUBSTANTIAL INSOLE. The only good thing about this rubbish is that it is removable. This is probably the most genuinely amusing of the "bad jokes" about this shoe. It is a scrap of cheapie material curved to resemble the shape of the foot and which then has the nerve to have things like "Absorber Zone" and "Bucket-Seat Technology" printed on various parts of it. I have no more words to waste on this bit of nonsense. Just, please do not place a lot of stock in the buzzwords printed on this insole and used as a selling point in the marketing materials for this shoe. P.S. After you remove this insole to insert your own orthotic, a cheaply constructed cardboard bottom is revealed.

3. ROUGH AND SCRATCHY INNER MATERIAL. This is a very serious design flaw. A few sober reviewers on other sites mentioned this. But it is almost central to the downfall of the shoe design. The interior is so rough and scratchy that I cannot even consider wearing this in the fashion I originally purchased this for: sockless. You MUST wear a sock to avoid the truly painful abrasion of the inner material against your tender skin. (Note: I purchased the Niro model that has solid sides, not see-through mesh ones).

MEASUREMENT-SPECIFIC PROBLEMS
This is where you might get lucky if your foot happens to fit the design of the shoe--and more power to you! Read on to learn if you fit that lucky description...or not.

1. WIDTH. If you, like me, have a foot that is wider towards the front/toes and narrower towards the back/ankle, the shoe will likely fit poorly. Here's what I mean: I have a relatively wide width foot by U.S. marketing standards, but that is only in the part nearer to the toes. The part of my foot nearer my ankle is narrower. The Allrounder (Niro) Mary Jane is wide at all points. That's good news for my toe box but bad news for the rest of my foot, which slips and over which the fabric gaps. Slippage and gap-age are NOT good for a so-called "walking shoe."

2. TOP OF FOOT: Along those same lines, the top of the shoe is built up too high for an average-volume foot, and the adjustable Velcro strap does not remedy this problem sufficiently. If your foot is skin and bones, forget about being able to wear this shoe without thick socks or high orthotics (or else major slippage and gap-age). If your foot, however, is plump and fleshy on the top and sides, or if you are looking for a shoe to accommodate your high-arched bulky orthotics, you're in luck; this will probably fit you with the proper amount of snugness.

3. HEEL. It is very loose in the heel, which contributes to slippage and chafing. And no, going down a size will not work, as the length is not the problem. And no, the back Velcro strap, though appreciated, does not help all that much. Again, the shoe has been built "out" too far and wide, so a narrower heel will slip and slide unhealthily while walking. If you have a plump or fleshy heel, you will not have this problem. (Note: I did alleviate the problem only somewhat by buying those stick-on gel heel liners from the drugstore. It's still untenable).

4. ANKLE "TAB": The back of the shoe has a sort of "tab" that sits too high on my ankle for comfort. I don't think it's supposed to sit this high; my guess is that it's meant to rest at the "dip" you encounter when transitioning from your heel to you ankle. But my heel-to-ankle height is too short to allow for this. Anyway, the result is that every step I take is very uncomfortable, with the tab rubbing and chafing against my ankle bone. I wish I could cut that tab down somehow!

GOOD POINTS
1. Good color selection
2. Sturdy, athletic-style soles with good grip

VERDICT

This is the biggest shoe disappointment I've had in several years. The Allrounder works so well for so many people that it's a let-down to find you're not amongst that group. As I showed above, some flaws are inherent to the design, while others are subjective based on one's individual foot. Honestly, if I didn't have the latter set of problems, I would probably keep this shoe and wear socks to alleviate the scratchiness and purchase high quality orthotic insoles to remedy the arch support problem. But this shoe should NOT have those design flaws to begin with; we are talking about a $160 pair of casual "lifestyle" shoes.

Maybe the shoe was made specifically for people who wear high orthotics. If this is the case, I am a lot more neutral about the shoe and don't feel as disappointed.
