Saucony Women's Cortana 3 Running Shoe,Vizipro Coral/Citron,8.5 M US Review

This is my second pair of Saucony Cortanas. The first pair worked very well for my situation and lasted better than most shoes I, or my friends, have worn.

This shoe has a 4mm offset. Offset is the drop from heel to toe. Most running shoes are between 0 and 12mm offset, so this one is fairly flat. Larger offsets are fine for heel striking runners, but midfoot or forefoot strikers generally prefer less offset. My strike changes depending on the terrain and pace of my run. On long runs and smooth surfaces I heel strike, but on rough trails, up hills, or at a greater pace, I transition to mid- or forefoot. I found this transition difficult with 10-12mm offsets. I felt like I was forcing my toe down and the excess heel was getting in my way. With the Cortanas, I can choose how to strike and the shoes allows me to run the way I want, and feel comfortable and natural each way.

Most low offset shoes are basically racing flats and have minimal padding, but the Cortana has full padding, so they are better for longer training mileage or runners who need more padding due to size or injury history. I am over 50 and try to protect my joints as much as possible, so I like the padding as injury prevention. It makes the shoes a bit heavier, so a lighter pair for racing could be worthwhile, but I don't bother.

Comparing the Cortana 3 to the original Cortana, it is a bit narrower across the forefoot, which works OK for me, as the old ones were slightly too wide there. They also seem to have a bit more rocker under the midfoot, so the "ride" (transition from heel to toe as the shoes rolls forward) is smoother. I like that. They now feel more like the Brooks Pure Flow, but with a somewhat stiffer sole. I run mostly woods trails with lots of roots and rocks, so the stiffer sole protects my feet better. On roads, I prefer the Brooks, but the Cortana does all surfaces better overall.

Now, my two beefs:
First, the Cortana 3 is stiffer across the top of the midfoot and I have to lace them quite loosely to keep them from cutting into the tendons on the front of my ankle. Perhaps this will go away with break in. I only have a two weeks in these, so far. But this problem did not occur with the original pair.

Second, Saucony does not make narrow widths for men, so men with narrow feet need to buy women's models. I can live with this, BUT there are only two color choices in the women's Cortana 3, one all pink, the other teal with pink, both very feminine. If Saucony is going to make narrow footed men buy women's models, they should at least make one with more nuetral colors. I don't mind bright colors, blues, greens, reds, yellows, whatever, but pink is the one color that screams "This is a women's shoe!". It's not like a man with a narrow foot is an unusual customer for a high end running shoe.

Oh, and while I am at it, these are about the most expensive running shoes on the market and I can't figure out why. 50% more than comparable Brooks Pure Flow. I'm sure that chases some folks away from a very good shoe.

Whining aside, these are excellent shoes for the medium to high mileage runner who wants a low offset without sacrificing padding. Despite the price and undesirable color choices, I bought a second pair because they work well and have helped me up my mileage and pace without injury.
